Students learn the fundamentals of medical billing and coding and are prepared to take the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam from the National Health career Association, the Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) exam from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), and the Certified Coding Associate (CCA®) exam from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Program topics include medical terminology; insurance plans; medical ethics; HIPAA; diagnostic and procedural coding; coding compliance and auditing; physician and hospital billing; Medicare, Medicaid, and TRICARE; EOBs, refunds, and appeals; workers' compensation; and electronic claims processing. Students receive in-depth training on ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS code assignment.

This course provides basic knowledge about the responsibilities for providing basic medical care to patients in a health care environment. Patient care tasks such as taking vital signs, assisting with daily living activities, observing patients and charting changes in their health or behavior, escorting patients and obtaining lab specimens will be key aspects in the learning of this course.


This class builds an understanding of the structures of the human body including organs, systems, and body as a whole, including a study of body cells and the types of tissues. Students will be introduced to anatomical position and direction, as well as body function balance, which include homeostasis, feedback loop, negative and positive feedback. Students will also learn the root words, prefixes and suffixes related to tissues, organs, systems body cavities, and the body as a whole
