The course focuses on accurate spelling and pronunciation of medical terms and abbreviations that are commonly used, and building knowledge of basic medical vocabulary with an emphasis on prefixes, suffixes, roots, and combining vowels. Anatomical, physiological, and pathological terminology are covered. Body systems and the terminology associated with them are discussed.

This course introduces basic concepts of use and maintenance of an Electronic Health Records (EHR) system, provides exposure to basic navigation of an EHR, and explores issues around privacy, security, government regulations and ethical legal aspects of health information technology environment.

This course is a laboratory introduction to microscopic and chemical analysis of blood and urine as performed in the physician's office. Basic procedures for diagnostic tests, including the handling and preservation of specimens, urinalysis, and capillary and venous blood withdrawal are performed.

This course provides basic knowledge about the responsibilities for providing basic medical care to patients in a health care environment. Patient care tasks such as taking vital signs, assisting with daily living activities, observing patients and charting changes in their health or behavior, escorting patients and obtaining lab specimens will be key aspects in the learning of this course.

This course presents an overview of legal and ethical issues facing providers of healthcare. It provides students with a foundation of health law and ethics and reviews a wide variety of health care legal and ethical situations and dilemmas. The goals are to provide students with practical knowledge of health laws and ethics and their application in the real world of health care. By the end of the course, students will have been exposed to many management ideas, theories and applications of health care law and ethics. Students will have a working knowledge of pertinent law and ethical procedures and how to apply them in health care arena.

This course provides skill development in the performance of blood collection using proper techniques and standard precautions. Topics include phlebotomy equipment and procedures for collecting venipuncture and capillary specimens. Emphasis is on patient identification, safety, preanalytical variables, infection control and specimen handling. Students are required to be certified in CPR.

The course prepares students to work in a medical setting assisting physicians and office personnel by performing assigned duties in administrative and may include minimal clinical procedures. The work experience is supported by externship instructor site visits and classroom seminars.
